JKR’s Harry Potter Series has gained so much popularity that not many people know about the various other authors of the same genre like Philip Pullman (The Golden compass), Christopher Paolini (The inheritance cycle) and the likes. One such person is Jonathan Stroud, who wrote “The Bartimaeus Trilogy” among other works, which like all trilogies has three books, <i>The Amulet of Samarkand</i>, <i>The Golem’s Eye </i>and <i>Ptolemy’s gate.</i> </span><o:p></o:p><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;">The trilogy revolves around three characters, Nathaniel, Kitty and Bartimaeus. Infact, if anything, it falls.. well, short of it. The thing about parodies is that they are meant to be made by people who watch the original ones, for the ones who watch the original ones. And with QGM, that just doesn't seem to be the case.<br /><br />The plot of the movie is straight forward: our vegetarian and well decorated hero Quick Gun Murugun (Rajendra Prasad) tries to stop non-vegetarian Rice Plate Reddy (Nasser) from converting the vegetarian hotels in a retro town to non-vegetarian hotels. Unfortunately, our hero gets killed in the process and gets sent to Chitragupta. After pleading his case to him, QMG gets sent back to complete his job of stopping RPR from spreading the message of non-vegetarianism. However, upon returning, QMG finds himself in present day Mumbai where our hero finds himself with the task of hunting down our villain (a bit of 'glamour' is furnished by Ramba, who plays Mango Dolly and some gangster action is thrown in by Gun&nbsp;</span> <span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: normal;"><span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Powder and Rowdy MBA).</span></span></span><br /><div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; margin-left: -4.3pt; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; mso-add-space: auto;"><span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Though the script makes abundant attempts to pull off jokes from stunts, colourful costumes and interesting names, all of them seem utterly ineffective and lame. The manager tells us that they actually combine two completely different cuisines (Chinese base with Indian masala) giving Vevina its unique identity. The authentic “Biryani” is what they are known for. You could also do more than just quench your thirst with their exquisite mocktail bar which has a whole lot of weird combinations starting from coke to fruits to masala and what not-all in your drink!! Lastly for all you “health freaks”, this is THE place, because there aren’t any artificial flavors and ajinomoto added.<br />AMBIENCE: The first thing you would notice when you enter is the ‘IN YOUR FACE’ orange that’s all over the place. It’s blinding! Vevina gives you a semi-fine dining experience. It also has three different menus-the thunder offer menu, the standard menu and the door delivery menu. For entertainment there’s just a TV which is something to take your eyes of the bling orange.<br />PRICE: Reasonable.<br />BOTTOM LINE: It’s a pretty decent, fairly new and reasonable hangout joint. It was the first time for dad though. He cried.<br /><br />I love this movie. It's one of the most honest films I've seen. Will Smith has portrayed the character with such conviction that it seems like he IS Chris Gardner. You feel for him throughout. You laugh with him. You cry with him. This movie really makes you want to get out there and do something worthwhile. The life lessons that Gardner teaches his son (Will Smith's own son, Jaden Smith, is unbelievable as Christopher) should really be put into practice in all of our own. <br /><br />” Don't ever let somebody tell you you can't do something. You got a dream, you gotta protect it. People can't do something themselves, they wanna tell you you can't do it. If you want something, go get it. Period. “<br /><br />The story of how a guy who sells bone density scanners for a living gets an internship at a stock brokerage and emerges top of his class to become a broker, setting up his own firm in 6 years and selling it in a multimillion dollar deal 25 years later is something that everybody should wonder at. This was a guy who loses his wife who moves on to something better because she does not believe in him; gets evicted because he can't pay rent; moves into a motel and gets kicked out because he can't pay the bill; spends a night in the bathroom in the subway; spends a night in jail and attends his interview for the internship without a shirt; which leads to my most favorite dialogue in the movie - <br /><br />Mr. Frohm: What would you say Chris, if a guy walks into the interviewer's office without a shirt? What would you say if the interviewer gave the guy the job?<br />Chris Gardner: I got to say sir, he must have been wearing some really nice pants.<br /><br />It's a perfect father-son movie, let me tell you. The relationship Chris shares with his son Christopher is something to be admired and lauded. The part where Christopher touches his dad's face and says, "You're a good papa" underlines this point. The last scene, where they say knock-knock jokes to each other, is especially touching.<br />This movie is about determination. It's about the will to succeed . It's about the underdog. It's about how a guy can overcome all odds and go on to be somebody, just because he knew he had it in himself. It's about belief - belief that you can do something with your life; belief that you can prove your detractors wrong; belief that you can make it on your own.<br /><br />Chris Gardner says “Thomas Jefferson mentions the pursuit of happiness in the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson was right. Happiness is something which one can only pursue, and can never acquire. “ Happiness isn't meant to be got. It's like you reach out to grab something and yet it's not there anymore. People have their own goals, their own definitions of happiness. But once you get there, what then? Does that mean you can never be happy again? Does that mean you can stay happy forever? Happiness is a myth. There's nobody in the world who can ever be truly happy, unless you achieve what you want<br /><br />Which is why, in my opinion, you should set short term goals. Once you reach them, you are one step closer to becoming happy. You move on to your next goal. And so on and so forth. After which, once you reach your long-term goal, there you have it. THAT's when you are truly happy. <br /><br />I love this movie and I love cinema. The beauty of it is that you get to think things over and come to conclusions after the movie's done. I finally managed to hit upon the right one. The One, I should say. (Credit to my friend who helped me choose the book)<br /><br />So, what's this book all about you ask? Well, it's basically a chronicle of life lessons, a dying sociologist Morrie Schwartz gives his students, one of them in particular, the author Mitch Albom, who wrote this book in 1997.<br /><br />Why is this book so good? There's no one or two reasons. It just is. It's one of the few books that can give you an immensely feel-good sensation right after you put it down. [Not to take anything away from the fact that Morrie is dying (no, this is not a spoiler, the author mentions it head-on)]. It teaches you valuable life lessons, and you really have to sit back and appreciate the thought process that has gone into writing such a book. It doesn't use impossible-to-understand words, no, rather it's a book about stuff which most of us would have known but not thought about. It welcomes the reader with arms wide open and coerces him into a period of introspection, which he will ultimately benefit a great deal from.<br /><br />There are quite a few themes dealt with in this book. Acceptance, communication, love, values, openness, and happiness. Morrie describes to the author the importance of forging your own culture. "Be your own man", he says, which, frankly speaking, most of us don't want to be. As the DoCoMo advertisement goes, why follow the herd when you can "do the new". Unfortunately, that just doesn't happen. He also describes how he detaches himself from experience, which allows him to experience life more fully. He says that he fears death, yes, but once you know that you are dying, acceptance becomes inevitable. <br /><br />Morrie Schwartz was a man to admire. He makes you think about various aspects, the various stages of life. Birth, school, college, university, work, marriage, children, and the end. It's a routine which most of us follow, and very few of us want to break away from. Why would you break away from something which has been already set in stone, right? Morrie teaches us to accept life as it comes, with a pinch of salt, and be what you want to be. Because at the end of it all, it's the happiness quotient that matters. If you aren't happy doing what you're doing, don't do it.<br /><br />Tuesdays with Morrie was an amazing read for me. There was a smug expression on his face and being the interviewer, he had the power to utter those golden words – ‘YOU will get into the club, only if you answer this question’ (Trust me, many such questions will be tagged with the golden sentence, during the course of these interviews, that at the end of the interview, one ends up getting too used to gold, that one wants to listen to the platinum sentence). Being the hard-core-Coimbatore-lover that I am, I rebuked myself severely for having scratched my head a little too much that evening and for grinning wide to admit that I did not know the answer (And I got into the club, without answering this question, yes). <br />Coimbatore (a.k.a Kovai) was once a dense forest and amidst all those trees, it managed to house a small tribal group called the Irulas, who gradually started refurbishing the land. The Irula tribe was led by King Kovan and he christened his land ‘Kovanpudur’ (no, not Kovaipudur). The Kovan and the Pudur elements of the word became diluted and due to the British influence, the land came to be known as ‘Coimbatore’. During the period of the Cheras, Coimbatore was known as ‘Veera Kerala Nallur’ and it was also known as ‘Koniamanpudur’, because of the presence of the Koniamman temple. Doesn’t this make you want to go “What’s in a name?”<br />Coimbatore has been gracious enough to put up with me for 20 odd years and during this period of time, I have managed to befriend the city and lead a symbiotic relationship with it. This city has never been ‘the third largest city in South India’ or ‘the Manchester of South India’ for me. It has been the unfussy and simple city that lets you lead a much uncomplicated life (According to me, a city is very VERY important in determining the life that you lead). Coimbatore has faces to it, unlike a couple of cities that wear masks. While many metropolitan cities pant vehemently, this city takes some time out to breathe meditatively. <br />The tree laden curvaceous roads of Race course, the crowded bus stand in Ukkadam, the lustrous cross cut road, throbbing with the dynamic pulse that can so rarely be found in other parts of this city, the amiable Saibaba colony, the parallel silver-tongued Avinashi and Trichy roads, the harmonious lanes of Vadavalli furnish the city with naiveté, that can seldom be found in any other metropolitan city. <br />Through this column, I will attempt to capture scents (like that of Annapoorna’s mouthwatering sambar), sights (like that of neatly cut Krishna Sweets’ Mysore Pak, arranged homogeneously in a tray) and sounds (like that of the noisy crowd in Kannan departmental store, on a Saturday or a Sunday evening) of Coimbatore. The first 18 years of our life we take to “grow up”, the<br />next ten or so, to serve our needs and the rest to bring more money into our<br />pockets. Ultimately, we end up damaging our planet throughout our life time!<br /><br /> We take our planet and everything in it (including things which don’t<br />belong to us) for granted! Please do yourself a favour, come out of<br />your precious bubble and look around you. Then you will be able to see<br />how we have treated earth like one big dustbin. How many people<br />take it up as their duty to clean up our mess?<br /><br /> I am not going to list out the environmental issues and ways to solve<br />them! We get that everyday, be it the newspaper or television. Everyday<br />we get warnings about the bad state the world is in. Yet we choose to ignore it.<br /><br /> Look around you… Do you see the Earth of your dreams? Don’t you feel<br />like somebody punched you in the stomach when you see some responsible<br />citizens treat our roads their public restrooms? Well, let’s try and bring<br />back the earth our ancestors left us with. I am talking about the ages<br />before the war and nuclear weapons.<br /><br /> Thanks to us, Homo sapiens, we have a very huge hole in the ozone layer,<br />we reproduce too much too often that we are currently looking for<br />another planet to reproduce in and pollute. <br /><br /> For the people who loved Michael Jackson, did you know he was an active<br />member in more than 50 charity and environmental organizations? For<br />the people who don’t like him, “even he did so much”. I know in our busy schedule of endless tearjerkers and drama, of fighting for the silliest issues, our planet is the least of our<br />worries. Are we even doing anything about it? Veiled by indifference, are we even trying to look beyond the veil? We know our long list of problems<br />from racism to greed and sexual permissiveness and what not but how aware are we, about the planet that nourishes us? We leave it to the government and the other<br />dependable people to perform our duties. Why do we have to rely on the government to solve our<br />problems, when WE, yes WE are the government? Do we take pride over our nation? <br /><br /><br /><br /><br />Why can we not save our planet and bequeath a cleaner, greener Earth to the next generation? He managed to get in just as the doors slid shut, thanks to the fat jerk with the hotdog with extra mustard in his hand. He raised a brow in frustration. That is all he did. Fate takes its toll on men. And apparently train travels too. <br /> <br /><span style=""> </span>He went in and took the seat by the executive, who read the business magazine all the time. He never got what fascinated him so much. And he never tried to get it. He looked out the window. The grim walls of the tunnel passed by fast, in the opposite direction as fast as him. Had it been a little sign, he'd forgotten to interpret? <br /> <br /><span style=""> </span>The train stops. He looks out expectantly, and there they were; the red-haired woman, with her equally red haired little girl. He couldn't help but smile. For a moment he forgot about his three missing teeth and grinned. The woman sat opposite to him with her girl. He had been waiting for the day he'd see them again. The day he'd hear the kid's surprised laugh whenever he pulled the penny trick on her (worked like a charm every single time), the day he'd have a peaceful chat with her again. He called out to the little girl. <br /> <br /><span style=""> </span>"Hey kid. Remember me? " <br /> <br /><span style=""> </span>The kid stared at him. She got down at Springfield Avenue, as she'd always done. She walked left after getting down as she always had done. There was the lady with the kid, sitting there opposite to him. The kid was looking misty eyed at the young man who pulled a penny out of her ear. They looked happy. "I'll tell you when you get older kid."</i> <br /> <br /><span style=""> </span>The young man vanished into mist along with the lady and the girl too. He was left staring into the window pane opposite him. A worn out face, scars right across the right cheek, a plastic cone where there should have been a nose, 3 teeth missing, a hat drawn low over the forehead to hide the scars that were there. But the eyes, they were still the same, the very same blue eyes which twinkled while pulling the penny out of the ear. He tore his eyes away from the pan and put his hand inside his pocket and pulled out a grimy penny. Those deeds bring us satisfaction; and satisfaction is definitely not pure unadulterated happiness.<br /><br />So, what are the possessions that can bring a person happiness?<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Good food</span> - Food is something that many of us can easily conjure an image of. Good food must be tasty, healthy, must not leave you gasping on your dining chair and definitely not on your toilet seat.<br />It must be tasty enough to put a smile on your face without the slightest of interference from your brain. It must be healthy enough to enable you to live for several years over which, you can consume more of the delightful mass. And last but not least, good food must be sentimentally pleasing.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Wealth, money and all that jazz</span> - There are many ways in which people interpret wealth. Some call it their family, others think that wealth is their mental sanity and many think that wealth is anything that is worth money. To me, wealth is mostly the money you possess and a bit of everything else. At this point, you may raise your eyebrows with doubt or even contempt and might go to the extent of declaring me, a shameless narcissist. But, for a minute, think of how convoluted wealth would become if one confuses it with happiness. Family, generosity and everything else that one might choose to add to that list is far more than wealth. Wealth is quiet simply, happiness from abundance of richness. Nothing more and nothing less. However, happiness is something beyond. Though many affirm and reaffirm that 'money is not everything', it almost is everything.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Good looks ? -</span> A happy person must look happy.<br />One's clothing must resonate the sense of happiness and joy that prevails in one's mind. The attire must feel comfortable and at the same time, must not immerse one's senses entirely in its vanity. To the onlookers, the attire must not scream of your happiness. It must rather melodiously sing it to their eyes. It must not make the onlookers jealous. But must make them appreciate it. It must make them smile.<br />One can have a potbelly or can be excessively puny and still be the happiest person in the world. It is not one's personal physical appearance that matters but the fact that the person is happy the way they are. Come to think of it, a lean Santa Clause wouldn't have been as much fun as the one with rosy cheeks and a big belly.<br />In short, one must know that given the way they look, they can go where they want, talk to who they want to and get what they want.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Professional life - </span>Relaxation is meaning less without stress or strain. In fact, an over relaxing life can be rather cloy and boring. A person with the perfect life would be the one who has a high paying job as the technical or financial consultant of several multinational large-scale enterprises. Obviously, one must also have the intellectual and technical expertise and should be of impressive intelligence so as to sustain such a high paying job without the tensions of the job taking its toll on the person's mental and physical health.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Travelling - </span>We must understand and accept that we see the world when we travel and it is this world that shapes our thoughts.<br />One's means of travel must be of the kind that shows a wholesome picture of the world; the good, the bad, the bitter truth and the comforting reality.<br />A perfect journey back home after a day's hard work would begin 40 stories high, above the towers of the city, in a lift that is walled by transparent glass and descends to a busy yet uncrowned street. From there, a short taxi ride to a private airport from where one is flown to a private island in a private jet. In the island, must be a fair distance between the landing strip and the mansion which must be covered in a fancy car with a thunderous engine and princely luxuries.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Lifestyle -</span> Much unlike popular belief, the best house is not the biggest one. The best house is one that is filled with so many memories that to the one it belongs to, the house is alive; in other words, the house must be alive with memories. It must enjoy your happiness in times of prosperity and must give you the sense of comfort that there exists a place where one cannot be disturbed by the world. It must never be too small for one's dear and loved ones and must never be so big that one feels lonely in it.<br />It should have a private coastline (indeed a private island would) with lots of sun shine, clear blue skies and cool breeze.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Etc - </span>The sense of satisfaction that comes from helping the needy is sublime. A person cannot be truly happy without knowing for sure that he or she makes others happy.<br />The feeling of having played an important role in the stage, is like the final brush strokes to a master piece.<br /><br />'Happiness is real only when it is shared'.<br />The happy person must have happy friends and a happy family to share the joys of life with.<br />A family is a huge responsibility; but it is also the key to greater happiness that one can attain by living up to the responsibility.<br /><br />These are the few things that are essential for a happy life. It might seem like it is a lot to ask for; however, no one is asking. The monsoons were finally receding. The atmosphere was heavy and moisture hung in the air beclouding as much was possible of the garden. A young girl, with a little straw basket held slackly under her arms, was standing alone in the fog and was waiting patiently and eagerly for it to clear. The sight that she had been waiting for the past couple of weeks was about to unveil itself in front of her. <br /> More clouds dispersed as the sun slowly rose over the horizon. When its rays finally reached the garden, the girl was found gaping in awe. Translucent, lissome, dew drops fell from a bright red and pink fusion of ripe litchis, that were hanging in enormous bunches crowned by dark green leaves. These lined both sides of the muddy lane that stretched out before her. It was a magnificent sight and the smell of the soil added the subtle spice to complete the experience.<br /> This wasn’t new for Chutki. It was just the same as it had been for the past eight years, yet her initial enthusiasm remained ever as high. <br /> Chutki lived next to a litchi garden. Her mother worked for the landlord of the area and she hadn’t seen her father in quite sometime. It was her morning job that made the eye of envy for the other children in the village; Chutki picked litchis.<br /> Every single morning during the harvest season, Chutki woke up early and rushed to the garden and at stood at the very same spot to watch the mist clear. She ran along picking the ripe fruits from the trees. She happily went about through the hard, tiring routine. Most of the time she sang, and the other times she relished the ecstasy from a stolen litchi. She loved the garden. She’d spend entire afternoons, and even evenings at the garden, intoxicated by the fruits. <br />She would just sit there and smile and she would dream. She would dream of land beyond and life away from the garden. Many of her friends at school had moved to the city. She heard so many stories one day wished that she could go there. we ELS members huddle around for, there was a naissance (or rather a renaissance, because every single year, this idea keeps popping up in our heads, but it just wouldn’t materialize); the brainchild All this happened about ten days back. We put our thinking caps on and began scribbling down whatever cropped up in our heads – short stories, reviews, articles and what not? Thoughts and e-mails were exchanged, sentences composed, words bombarded at anything clean and white, words </span><span style="font-family: trebuchet ms;"> </span><span style="font-family: trebuchet ms;">slashed, characters conjured, pictures illustrated, colors splashed and everything was compressed into a 10 page long tabloid. </span><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 22.5pt; font-family: trebuchet ms;font-family:georgia;"><span style=""><span style="font-family: trebuchet ms;">All this would not have been possible without a few people and I would like to thank them, for having nurtured the idea and for having nourished it. Our Principal Dr. R.
